How To Fix Netgear Router Flashing Orange Light?

A blinking orange light on netgear router is very frustrating issue. Because it indicates that you don’t have access to the internet anymore.

Usually, Netgear routers get flashing orange or amber light because of several reasons. but don’t worry—most are fixable with a few simple steps.

Common Causes of Netgear Router Flashing Orange Light Problem:

Usually, Netgear router has no internet connection because of the loose or faulty wiring. when your router is not properly connected to the modem properly, you will see a flashing orange light.

Meanwhile, there can be several others reasons, That will turn a blue internet light into the amber/ orange light.

  1. No Internet Connection (ISP related issue).
  2. Connection between router and modem is invalid.
  3. Router requires an firmware update.
  4. Router configuration is incorrect.
  5. Cables are loose or faulty.
  6. Hardware problem.

What To Do When Netgear Router Has A Flashing Orange Internet Light ?

Step 1- Check the internet connection problem –

When you see the flashing orange light on the router, you should check the internet connection status on the modem.

Do you have a flashing blue light or orange light on your modem?

If you have a blue light on the modem. It means, the internet is working fine on the router.

So the problem is with in the router itself. in such a case, you need to troubleshoot the router. For that, you need to jump to the step 3.

Somehow, if you see a flashing orange light, you need to follow step 2.

Step 2- Reboot the modem –

When you see a flashing orange light on the modem, you need to reboot it. To do that, you need to unplug the modem, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.

This refreshes the connection between your modem and ISP.

If this doesn’t help, this could be an ISP related issue. for that, you need to talk to your ISP service provider.

Step 3 – Restart Your Router:

Whenever your netgear router is not working, you should power cycle it once. To do that, you need to follow the instructions given below.

  • Turn off your router and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for 10 seconds and then plug it back in.
  • Power it on and check if the orange light persists.

Step 4- Inspect Cables and Connections

A loosely connected or damaged Ethernet cable could interrupt the connection between your router and modem. due to which, you may see the flashing yellow light on the Netgear smart wifi router.

To fix this connection problem, you need to follow the instructions given below.

  1. Ensure that all cables are securely connected, especially the Ethernet cable between your modem and router.
  2. Make sure that your modem is connected from the Internet/WAN port of the router. It will be a yellow color port.
  3. Replace any damaged cables to rule out connectivity issues.

Step 5 – Reconfigure IP and DNS Settings

If you are using the PPPOE or other connection type, you should configure the connection settings accordingly. to do that, you need to follow the instructions given below.

  • Log in to the router’s admin panel.
  • Go to the Internet Settings section.
  • Here you need to update the LAN, DNS and Internet connection type.
  • Once you will change the Internet settings, press apply changes button.

If you don’t know about your connection type & internet settings, you may call your ISP for details.

Step 6 – Update Router Firmware

Let’s check what type of firmware version is being used on the router? If your router is using an older version of firmware. It may become the reason for blinking orange light. in such a case, you have to update the firmware of your netgear router.

To do that, you need to follow the instructions given below.

  • Log into the Netgear admin panel through your browser (usually at 192.168.1.1 or you can go to the routerlogin.net).
  • Click on the advanced option.
  • Now go to the Firmware Update section. It is available under the firmware section.
  • Follow the instructions to download and install the latest firmware.

Step 7 – Reset & Reconfigure The Router –

If you have tried the above instructions but your router still have a solid or blinking orange light. you may perform factory reset to fix it.

But before you do that, let me warn you. when you reset the router. it will be restore it’s settings to the factory default. so you have to configure the router again.

Now if you are ready to reset your router. you may follow the instructions given below.

  1. Let’s find the reset button available at the back or bottom of the router.
  2. Take a paperclip or pin, now press and hold it for 30 seconds.
  3. Release the button after 30 seconds, and wait for a minute.

Once you will see all steady lights on the router, you need to start the router setup process. Once you will configure the internet connection. you will get a solid blue light on the router.

After trying the above steps if your router is still not functioning, this could be a hardware issue. in this case, you can contact netgear support and ask them to replace your router.
