Thank you for your suggestions. It was a problem with the VPN. I had enabled VPN, due to which, my mail app was not able to reach to the Gmail server. Once I disabled it, it is working fine now. 

This is a network/ internet connection related issue. So you need to troubleshoot the connection. After that, you need to reload the Gmail page. it will start working fine. 

Also, sometimes, you can have this error because of the Gmail server issues. so you can also check the server status at <a href=" removed link " target="_blank" rel="noopener">google workplace dashboard. make sure that everything is working fine over there.
